Structural adaptation of a pregnant patient increases force of the sacroiliac joints in the pelvis, the lumbar discs and the facet joints. As extra weight is projected forward there is an increase in the lumbar lordosis. These factors can all contribute to lower back pain. Other causes of low back pain during pregnancy can arise from hormonal changes in the last trimester leading to pelvic hyper mobility and direct pressure of the baby on lumbosacral nerve roots.
Studies show 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain during pregnancy and up to 75% experience back pain during labour. Chiropractic examination and treatment during pregnancy can be considered a safe and effective means of treating common musculoskeletal symptoms. In fact, research shows that 75% of patients who sought Chiropractic care during their pregnancy found relief and on average also experienced a 25% shorter labour time.
Another recent study showed women who have regular chiropractic treatment have the same pelvic floor strength as elite athletes.
